Accident and Emergency

The correspondence that led to them being given this award has been reproduced below:

“My Father, arrived at the Accident and Emergency department/ward on Thursday January 5th 2012 at 8:46 am and left the department at 12:22pm. He came because he had a nasty trauma gash to his right ear. He needed the gash stitched and glued.  My mother and I joined him as he arrived by ambulance at the ward.

My father is 81 years old and has Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s. He currently lives in a care home. From the time my father arrived in Accident and Emergency until the time he left he was treated with respect, kindness, thoughtfulness, understanding and patience. He was spoken to clearly and staff made sure he could hear them when they spoke to him and could what was being said to him.  My brother, my mother and I would like to thank all staff that helped my father during his stay.  We would like to thank specialist Doctor Brendan Conway, nurse Ashleigh (when he left the department he gave her a cuddle to show his appreciation) and the two male nurses who stitched my father’s ear (sorry I can’t remember their names), even down to the lady that gave my father a cup of tea (also my mother and me).

A great team who had a fantastic understanding of his dreadful illness.  I hope I have not forgotten anyone, if I have I am sorry and of course wish to thank them as well.

Thank you all very much once more.”

In the first instance I would state that the level of treatment that I have received has been to the highest standard and as such, I would ask you to convey my sincere thanks to the following members of staff:

  • Mr Madaan - Brilliant surgeon, the complete professional who oversees a great team. I could never thank him enough.

  • Mr Abbaraju - Always seemed to be there when I had a problem and his warm and cheery demeanour always eased the tension.

  • Dr Gabby - Ultra efficient, tells you how it is - puts the patient first.

  • Fay Fawke - Had the patience to take me step by step through my options and gave straight answers to straight questions. She also heads up a superb bridging team which I found invaluable.

  • Nicky Lancaster - Any problem or question answered without delay, always there too reassure and provide support. Would always be my first point of contact.

  • The Bridging Team - A great concept that provides the patient with all the reassurance and nursing care needed following an operation, plus a direct link to the consultant/hospital.

  • Adele - My first contact with the team. During my darker moments and fortunately they were few, Adele was always on hand to pull me through. My sincere thanks!

  • Kate and Cindy - As with Adele, were always there when I needed them. A great team.

  • Finally Mrs Gill on day care a real Florence Nightingale.

For someone who had never been hospitalised before I can only state, that in my considered opinion the level of expertise and care that I have received at Darent Valley Hospital have been second to none.”

Willow Ward/CRC

The correspondence that led to them being given this award has been reproduced below:

“In February 2011 my seven month old daughter was admitted to Willow Ward via the emergency room. She was diagnosed with an ecoli infection and remained in hospital for a week.  We have been returning regularly to the Children’s Resources Centre for follow up tests and have recently been discharged.  I would like to express my sincere thanks to every nurse, doctor and consultant that dealt with us during this time. The level of care we received was outstanding.

During our stay on Willow Ward, we were treated with professionalism and kindness.  The staff on Willow Ward managed to create a positive atmosphere despite the long working hours and high levels of stress they endure. The facilities were comfortable and very clean.

We were also impressed with the general organisation of the hospital. The procedures and treatments were consistent, appointments ran on time and follow up test with other departments were managed seamlessly.

We, like all parents with a sick child, felt anxious and helpless.  All the staff and in particular Dr Kulkarni treated us with patience and reassured us by taking the time to explain things clearly and answer our many questions. We cannot express our gratitude enough and feel very fortunate to have Darent Valley as our local hospital.”
