Having to go to hospital, or finding your way around a large and busy hospital, can be a daunting experience. This section provides you with practical information on, what to expect and who is available to give you further advice and support.

Security

Security staff ensure the safety of patients and staff within the hospital and its grounds. All staff should wear an identity badge. If you don't know who someone is, please ask. The Trust is equipped with both internal and external closed circuit TV cameras which are monitored. Security staff patrol the hospital, grounds and car parks during the day and night.

Fire policy for patients and visitors

All staff are trained in fire and evacuation procedures. In the unlikely event of a fire, nursing staff will take control of the situation and coordinate any necessary action. Patients and their visitors are requested to follow instructions given to them by staff in the event of any emergency.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the hospital buildings

Smoking is discouraged in the hospital grounds, but a small smoking shelter has been erected that is accessible on the main approach (near the bus shelters) to the hospital. Should visitors feel the need to smoke whilst on hospital grounds, this shelter should be used. Smoking anywhere else within the hospital grounds is prohibited

Patients coming to the hospital for treatment will be asked to consider giving up smoking to improve their health.  The programme is also available for visitors, members of the public and hospital staff.  Evidence shows that 70% of smokers are actively thinking about giving up smoking therefore it’s important that we give people the support they need to succeed.  Committing to giving up smoking will help Darent Valley Hospital reach one of its CQUINS* (Commissioning for Quality and Innovation Scheme) targets.
