I am a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Occupational Health), an area of nursing dealing primarily with the interaction between health and work.
I trained as a general nurse in Sheffield between 1974 and 1977. In 1978 I moved into the field of occupational health, working and gaining experience in the private sector (construction, paper mill and lead refining). I also undertook a course of study qualifying in the specialty in 1982. Around 1983 I moved back into the NHS working first for the Royal Marsden Hospital before commencing employment with Dartford and Gravesham in 1985.
I have been head of the department since 1999 serving as clinical lead, advising the Trust and its managers and responsible for service delivery, standards of care, policy, service development and income generation.
Our services include work related immunisations and vaccinations (hepatitis A + B, rubella, mmr, influenza), advice on sickness absence management, protection from workplace exposures, health surveillance (lung function and hearing tests, drugs of abuse testing), display screen equipment and organisational stress and health and wellbeing.
